Biography

William Browne is the chairman the Fine Arts Department, and has directed bands and orchestras and taught music, history and theory at the Culver Academies since 1981. He was named to the Hough Family Chair of Fine Arts in 1987, and was honored to be named Culver's Kaser Scholar in 2000. Professional affiliations include the International Horn Society (IHS), American Federation of Musicians (A.F.of M.), Music Educators National Conference (MENC), National Band Association (NBA) and the Indiana Bandmasters Association (IBA). 

Bill has performed professionally since 1972 when he  won the horn audition for the U.S. Marine Band, Washington DC, "The President's Own," where he served from 1972-76. Bill played in and conducted the 566th Air Force Band in Chicago, Illinois for many years. In addition to his musical work at Culver, Bill sponsors the Culver Outdoor Alliance outdoor club which is in its infancy on campus. He plays principal horn in the Kokomo Symphony, Kokomo Park Band, some regional orchestras, and the Mariah Wind Quintet. Bill holds degrees from Ball State University, Catholic University  and Indiana University

Bill holds as a high priority the whole education of young adults. He stays active as a performer, soloist, clinician, guest conductor, teacher and adjudicator for area and regional music groups, camps and organizations. He and his wife Linda have two children- Amy (CGA '94) and Michael (CMA '97), and one granddaughter ('22?)- and live in Culver with Libby the dog and Murray the cat.
