Historic Markers
African Americans
1800 ~ 1870

Several states have identified important people or places by posting signs that give a brief overview of a person or event. These are usually located near where the person may have lived or where the event took place. Sometimes there may be a historic site associated with the person, but not always. Still these markers can give names and details that lead to additional searches. Not all states have such a program, but North Carolina , Virginia , and Tennessee have numerous markers across their states that identify people and their contributions to state or national history. Some states have also published books listing all the markers. These are usually found in most public libraries in that state. Below are examples of markers for Elizabeth Keckly and Thomas Day.

Thomas Day cf060.JPG (36300 bytes) Milton, NC
