| Mr.
Gouwens and Mrs. (Mary) Lynch-Weirich teach piano students at The
Culver Academies. Mr. Gouwens also teaches organ and carillon,
when students with sufficient piano background request
either of those courses (prior consent of instructor
required). Private lessons (on piano, as well as in voice or
other other instruments) are open to students of every grade
level. Music is selected according to the skills and
background of each student. Once the student has
finished with the basic teaching repertory used in the
earlier stages, an effort is made to balance the assignment
of music to include a variety of styles and period of music
(baroque, classic, romantic, modern). At this level,
students do have some input into the selection of music. An extra fee is charged
for all private music lessons ($1,080 per year, $270 per term). In some situations, students on financial aid may be
able to obtain some assistance with these fees. Private
music lessons include one lesson per week. It is
expected that students will practice the equivalent of
four class periods (approximately three hours) per
week. For more information about Culver's private
lessons in general, check here.
Important Note: Because the demand for lessons (piano in particular) has tended to run high, we have often not been able to accommodate everyone who was interested. Students are advised to sign up for the course (initially with the lesson time listed as "TBA" - to be arranged), and to contact the appropriate instructor immediately, so that the teachers know what class periods the students have available. Students are assigned lesson times on a "first-come-first-served" basis. (Those who don't contact us or who are slow to get it done may end up being put on a waiting list.) Students are encouraged to contact the main voice teacher (Miss Warren) for information about voie lessons. Once a meeting time is established for a lesson, Mr. Gouwens handles scheduling the actual times with Guidance Services. For information about lessons on Organ or Carillon, click here: Organ Lessons Carillon Lessons As with all instructors at Culver, Mr. Gouwens has developed and codified a system of assessment for tracking progress and determining grades. For detailed information, on that, please see the separate listing under assessment system. |
